The growth was later revealed to be cancerous, but Lawrenson kept this a secret without notifying anyone. After having a malignant tumor on his face removed in 2018, a smile once again came back to his face.

When a worried viewer contacted Football Focus’ editor, he was made aware of how dangerous the growth was. The former BBC One analyst affectionately referred to his fans as “Lawro,” had two surgeries to treat the illness.

Following his successful operations, Mark went to Twitter and wrote, “After 3 Months of Outstanding care at both Ormskirk & Whiston Hospitals I got the News that after 2 Operations & the Removal of my Cancerous Facial Blemish the Cancer hasn’t Spread anywhere..Phew..!! Football fans and his colleague breathe a sigh of relief after seeing his tweet.

Lawrenson also described how a Football Focus viewer have saved his life when they discovered that he had a cancerous growth on his face. Additionally, he disclosed that a TV viewer’s email asking him to get a darker area on his skin examined immediately led to his doctor’s visit. Now the 65-year-old is an ambassador for Prostate Cancer.
