He possessed excellent game knowledge and was a sharp player with perfect field positioning. However, injuries plagued him repeatedly, forcing him to call it quits as a football player barely ten years after he started. He played for five different clubs in England and Wales throughout that time.

After stepping away from the field as a player, in 2003, Hughes was chosen to lead Barry Town. Later, Hughes became the head of youth development at English League Two team Shrewsbury Town, where he worked for two years.

Nevertheless, his most notable managerial activity occurred in September 2011, when he accepted the position of youth team coach at Watford, a Championship team. In August 2014, he departed the group to become the Wales Under-21-Under-17 Assistant Intermediate Team Manager.

Hughes returned to Aston Villa as the Under-18 team manager in December 2016. Hughes began working with Southampton in July 2019 as the first Head of Academy Player Development. Hughes was named Cardiff City’s head of academy coaching in November 2020.

Eleri was 18 when their mother, who had been alive for 46 years, passed away. She spent her formative years in Wales with her famous brother Meilyr Siôn, a well-known author and performer. While working as a farmer, their father struggled to raise his two kids.
