Coy Gibbs, who served as the vice chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing for his NFL and NASCAR Hall of Fame father, passed away early Sunday morning, only a few hours after his son took home the championship.

“It is with great sorrow that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs went to be with the Lord in his sleep last night. The family appreciates all the thoughts and prayers and asks for privacy at this time”, the team released the statement.

“I think he’s got skills, and he’s determined. It definitely made me proud. I think it made my wife, we were both proud,” Saturday, after a contentious week, Coy Gibbs addressed the media and addressed his thoughts on his son’s upcoming championship race. 

Aside from that, Coy was guarded when providing personal information and insights about his family, particularly his wife and children.

Although he and his missus Heather were together for over two decades, during which time they had three other children in addition to their son, who is now 20 years old, he never disclosed any information regarding the specifics of his relationship or married life even though they have a son who is now 20 years old.

At the age of 13, Gibbs raced Shifter Karts at GoPro Motorplex for the first time during the summer of 2015. In 2019, Gibbs was racing the No. 18 car for Nelson Motorsports when he took first place in the IceBreaker 125 Late Model Stock event at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Gibbs won the ARCA Menards Series in 2021 and took home the trophy.

On January 11, 2019, his brother J.D. Gibbs passed away following a protracted struggle against a neurological brain disease. He had been battling this illness for a long time since the disease was first diagnosed in 2015.

Three years later, on November 6, 2022, Joe and Patricia’s second son, Coy, also perished while he was sleeping. This tragedy occurred three years after Joe’s and Patricia’s first son.
