Valvano urged the crowd to cheer, think, and weep every day and unveiled the foundation of The V Foundation for Cancer Research. He delivered the lecture only about two months before dying of adenocarcinoma.
His tribute has added the Jimmy V Award to the ESPY Awards. Every year, the Jimmy V Classic college basketball tournament is hosted in his memory with the aid of cancer victims and survivors.
Pamela was in a happy marriage with Jim Valvano before his sad succumb to cancer. However, there has been no news of Pamela remarried to another man after his death. She ensures that she regularly visits her late husband, Jim, at the Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. Pamela especially goes to see her late husband on his birthdays.

The two fell in love, and it was immediately after Jim graduated from Rutgers University that Pamela married him. Jim was an extremely cheerful man with a brilliant sense of humor. He had unmatched energy that made you love him without even trying.

Pamela had to endure a lot after Jim left her and the world. Her daughter, Jamie, also went through breast cancer at 33. She, however, recovered and went on to have children of her own.
