Who Is Dr Allan Zarkin MD? New York Case Update and Probation

Dr Allan Zarkin is an infamous doctor from Manhatten who carved his initials into a patient’s body while delivering her baby in 1999.

His action is counted as one of the dumbest actions performed by medical personnel in the history o medical science. He received a lawsuit of $1.7 Million but wasn’t sent to jail by the victim because of his old age.

Who Is Dr. Allan Zarkin MD?

Zakrin was a doctor at Beth Israel Hospital in Manhatten who specialized in solving issues faced by women during their pregnancy. He had coached his patient for several months until the time of childbirth had arrived. At the time of the incident, he had been a part of Liana Gedz’s pregnancy journey for seven months.

In 1999, Her first child was delivered through Caesarean section by the obstetrician who chose to carve his patient’s tummy after giving birth since he was so pleased with the c-section he performed on Gedz. Zarkin used his scalpel to write his initials, AZ, several centimeters high, on Gedz’s tummy. He stated that, in his opinion, the operation he performed was a masterpiece and that the carving he did was a part of the celebration. 

New York Case Update and Probation

The State Health Department and the Manhattan District Attorney’s office looked into Zarkin’s case. According to the reports, Zarkin had previously been the target of numerous complaints about his unpredictable behavior.

After further examination of the case, Zarkin found innumerable inappropriate behavior and vulgar remarks. However, none of them qualified as criminal activity. As a result, Zarkin was compelled to take a plea deal, and Gedz and her family approved it.

Zarkin was charged with second-degree assault. Getz’s attorney claimed that his client opposed Zarkin’s criminal prosecution and did not want him to go to jail. However, if he was found guilty of the most serious accusation against him, first-degree assault, Zarkin could have spent up to 25 years in prison.

Zarkin, who was 62 at the time, avoided jail time. For five years, he was not permitted to seek a medical license. Zarkin paid $1.75 million to resolve a $5.5 million civil complaint.

Dr. Allan Zarkin is not seen publicly after that incident. He wasn’t involved in such a crime ever after, and people believe that incident had changed him to be a different person than before. His family members are unknown as he never discussed them publically. Zarkin worked at Beth Israel and a practice in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood, where his partners fired him as soon as they learned about the carving.

Surprisingly, Zarkin was hired by an abortion clinic in Queens to conduct abortions and other gynecological treatment, including prenatal exams, after being fired from his previous practice and leaving the hospital. As soon as the clinic was made aware of the carving event and subsequent lawsuit, he was fired.

Zarkin’s justification was that he had Pick’s disease, a degenerative brain disorder. It is a rare and irreversible form of dementia related to Alzheimer’s and tends to damage particular brain regions selectively. Zarkin’s attorney asserted that the condition results in the brain’s frontal lobe deteriorating, impairs judgment, and accounts for Zarkin’s peculiar behavior.
