Gary Thibodeau, 63, died unexpectedly after spending 25 years to life in state prison for kidnapping Heidi Allen in 1994 from a New Haven convenience store.

According to Thibodeau’s attorney Lisa Peebles, he passed away at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility close to Albany.  Gary Thibodeau was suffering from a chronic lung condition.

Over the years, Thibodeau has maintained his innocence. On Easter morning in 1994, he and his brother Richard were accused of Kidnapping Heidi Allen from the D&W convenience store where she worked.

Allen’s kidnapper Gary Thibodeau was found guilty. Richard Thibodeau was determined to be innocent. Allen’s body was never discovered.

The whereabouts of Allen’s body have remained one of Central New York’s most frightening mysteries after weeks of searching by hundreds of volunteers.

Gary Thibodeau has always maintained his innocence. Peebles made several court appearances in an attempt to have Thibodeau’s case retried in light of evidence she felt proved other men had kidnapped Allen.

Heidi Allen Oswego, 18, of Oswego County, disappeared in April 1994 from a convenience shop in the Town of Scriba and hasn’t been seen since. Even after weeks of inspection by hundreds of volunteers, Heidi showed no signs of existence.

The police arrested the two local males after conducting a thorough investigation. Particularly, Richard Thibodeau was detained in May 1994 and denied any information that would have helped locate Heidi Allen.

Less than two years before his first potential parole hearing in January 2020, Thibodeau died suddenly. He received a 25-year to a life prison term in 1995.

After several witnesses came forward in 2014, stating that three more individuals had implicated themselves in Allen’s kidnapping and suspected demise, the case of Allen attracted new attention.

Following the disappearance of Allen on April 3, 1994, a thorough investigation resulted in the capture of Thibodeau and Richard, the last person known to have seen Allen alive.

In 1995, Oswego County prosecutors brought the Thibodeau brothers to trial, claiming that the two of them had jointly kidnapped Allen in Richard’s vehicle.

The prosecution made a detailed case without providing any tangible proof connecting the brothers to the kidnapping.

Gary Thibodeau was married to his wife Sharon Thibodeau. The brother and wife of a kidnapper found guilty are suing Oswego County, saying they were wrongfully detained in connection with the case.

According to the Syracuse Herald-American, Gary Thibodeau’s wife Sharon and his brother Richard are suing the county for $5 million each because they were wrongfully detained in connection with the kidnapping of convenience store worker Heidi Allen.

According to Sharon, she was detained for failing to appear in court on drug possession charges in Massachusetts, welfare fraud, and perjury for allegedly lying to the grand jury that indicted the Thibodeau brothers for deputies to get her to accuse her husband of being responsible for the kidnapping.
