Gemma Oaten is known for playing the character of Rachel Breckle in Emmerdale. She is one of the most talented actresses on TV.

What Happened To Gemma Oaten?

Gemma Oaten nearly died from food poisoning. She shared about her life-threatening experience with ITV’s Lorraine.

The Soap star said her calcium level was dangerously high two months ago. Nevertheless, the condition was years in the making.

She said: “It was only two months ago that this all happened, really,” 

“I had not been feeling well for a while, to be honest, but I didn’t practice what I preached, and I just put it down to one side.

She continued: “We’d had a big funding cut for the charity that I am CEO of, and I’d put it down to stress and the pressure of that. I was also doing a morning breakfast radio show, so I was getting up early at half past four and doing my full-time job and then auditions, so I just put it down to nausea, feeling tired.” The Emmerdale actress was also undergoing symptoms like stomach cramps, which she recalls happens during anxiety and stress. 

Gemma Oaten Illness & Health Update In 2022

Gemma Oaten was diagnosed with hypercalcemia, aka milk-alkali syndrome, a few months ago.

The milk-alkali syndrome is a condition with a high calcium level in the body. The illness causes a shift in the body’s acid/base balance toward alkaline. Consequently, the patient suffers from kidney problems like high urine output. Moreover, one will face headaches, nausea, fatigue, and pain in the abdomen.

Oaten discovered that she suffered from hypercalcemia following her COVID treatment this year. She found out in the clinic that she had a high level of calcium carbonate in her body. The condition was induced by taking Rennie tablets over the years.

The Emmerdale star also revealed that she had suffered from anorexia since age 10. Doctors had recommended her Rennie tablets after her anorexia turned into bulimia.

According to Google, bulimia is the boisterous episodes of overeating, called bingeing.

Gemma Oaten Does Not Know If She Can Have Children

Gemma Oaten has made peace with the fact that she might not carry a baby after her long battle with anorexia.

Her doctor reports revealed that she has only five egg-producing follicles- while the most female has 16 to 17. She also said of has an ovarian cyst and a mild form of endometriosis, which signals a lower chance of conceiving. 

In an interview in 2021, Oaten said: ‘It was a lot to take in. I have three siblings, who have seven children, so to tell my parents “I might be the one who doesn’t have kids” was hard.’ 

Gemma Oaten is not married; she dated Stuart Earp until 2021. As of now, she is single.
