In October 2006, when he was seventeen years old, Parnell made his first-class cricket debut for Eastern Province. He scored 17 runs and grabbed one wicket. He had a four-for-seven performance in his second first-class match and a hat-trick against Western Province in his fifth first-class game. While playing for Eastern Province in 2008, Parnell won the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola U19 Player of the Tournament and the CSA U19 Cricketer of the Year awards.

He was also a notable player during South Africa’s u19 world cup campaign in 2006 and 2008. After competing for the side in the 2006 U/19 Cricket World Cup, Parnell was chosen as the South African team’s captain for the 2008 U19 Cricket World Cup. He finished the 2008 WorldCup event with the most wickets, 18 at an average of 8.38. In the quarterfinal round against Bangladesh, he made six of his eight wickets, helping his side advance to the tournament semifinal.

Parnell made his international debut in the second Twenty20 International in Brisbane on January 13, 2009, after being chosen for the ODI and T20 squads for South Africa’s tour of Australia in 2008-09. He subsequently became Cricket South Africa’s youngest player to receive a national contract.

County Cricket

Parnell was given a six-week contract to play for Kent County Cricket Club as an overseas player at the beginning of the 2009 campaign. He took 4/78 in the first innings of his county debut against Essex and top-scored with 69 in the second, marking his first-ever fifty in a first-class competition.

He later improved on this total in Kent’s next County Championship game. Before the 2009 World Twenty20, Parnell left Kent to train with South Africa, although he later returned for an additional five weeks. Parnell was given the all-clear by Cricket South Africa to return to Kent after his second tenure finished, and he played for the county on the competition’s finals day.

IPL Contracts 

In the 2010 IPL auction, the Delhi Daredevils won the bid for Parnell. He became the third highest-paid South African cricketer in the competition after being purchased for a price far higher than his reserve price established at the auction’s beginning.

However, he did not play in any games for Delhi throughout the season. After playing for Pune Warriors in the IPL from 2011 to 2013, Parnell then returned to Delhi to compete for the Daredevils in 2014.

Western Province’s Captaincy

For the 2018 season, Parnell joined Worcestershire CCC as an international player. The Worcestershire Rapids went on to win their first Vitality T20 Blast Trophy at Edgbaston, largely thanks to Wayne’s significant contribution to the team’s season.

Parnell signed a Kolpak contract with Worcestershire in September 2018, preventing him from participating in international cricket. This was discussed as the moment that could end his cricketing career with the South African cricket team. 

Worcestershire released him after the 2020 season because of the cancellation of the Kolpak status. He was selected by Northamptonshire for the 2021 season as an overseas player and picked up ten wickets against Yorkshire in his second game for the team. He was included in the Western Province squad in April 2021, in time for the South African cricket season of 2021–2022. Parnell was chosen as Western Province’s captain for the CSA T20 Challenge in February 2022.
