However, he had to seek opportunities and be one of the best to withstand the competition. In Texarkana, Texas, Middlebrooks attended Liberty-Eylau High School. He pitched and played shortstop for his high school’s baseball team.

His fastball traveled as fast as 90 miles per hour when he pitched. Middlebrooks acknowledges that before learning that he could be taken in the Major League Baseball draft during his junior year, he preferred playing football. Middlebrooks began the 2011 campaign by playing for the Class AA Eastern League’s Portland Sea Dogs. He participated in the Eastern League All-Star Game and hit a double.
