John Gretton “Jocko” Willink is a retired United States Navy officer, author, and podcaster. He served in the Navy SEALs and was a member of SEAL Team 3. Here are some of the details regarding Willink.

Jocko Willink had military experience, including duty in Iraq when he led Task Unit Bruiser of SEAL Team 3, which engaged in the assault against Iraqi militants in Ramadi. 

For his service, Willink was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star Medal. He got famous after the position of lieutenant commander.

Willink and fellow retired SEAL Leif Babin co-authored the books Extreme Ownership and The Dichotomy of Leadership and co-founded the management consulting business Echelon Front, LLC.

He graduated from the University of San Diego with a B.A. in English.

Jocko Willink was active from the year 1990 until the year 2010. 

Willink reported to Naval Amphibious Base Coronado for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S) after completing Navy recruit training and Radioman (RM) “A” School training. Willink was a member of the BUD/S class 177.

He got the NEC 5326 as a combatant swimmer (SEAL), allowing him to wear the SEAL insignia after completing SEAL tactical training (STT) and a six-month probationary term. Willink served as an enlisted Navy SEAL with SEAL Team One and SEAL Team Two for eight years on active service.

Willink was a member of the SEAL squad that captured the Russian tanker Volga-Neft-147 in the Gulf of Oman, which was transporting Iraqi oil in defiance of a UN embargo.
