Wareing was born in the Merseyside town of Southport in the year 1970. His father was a fruit and potato trader with contracts to supply food for school lunches.
When he was 11 years old, his first job in the food industry was packaging potatoes and riding alongside deliveries with his father. He was paid 10p per 5 pounds (2.3 kg) bag of potatoes he packed, with the money going straight into his Post Office savings account.
Marcus’ father also told him as a child that the business was no longer viable since schools had moved to use pre-prepared frozen food instead of fresh veggies. Later, he attributed his father’s long hours to fostering a strong work ethic in him.
