His stepbrother Robin Dahlstrom played in Sweden and Norway until retiring in 2021, and he has a younger brother named Fabian, who competes in the Norwegian First Division. The  New York Rangers of the NHL signed free agent Zuccarello to a two-year, entry-level deal in the summer of 2010. He started the 2010–11 campaign with Hartford Wolf Pack/Connecticut Whale, an American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Rangers, to get used to the game and rink size in the North American continent.

He became the second undrafted player and the seventh Norwegian to play in the NHL when he made his NHL debut on December 23, 2010, against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He played 41 games for the Rangers before being transferred to Connecticut on April 1 of that year. Zuccarello made history on April 13, 2011, when he became just the second Norwegian to play in an NHL playoff game.

Zuccarello and the New York Rangers agreed on a one-year deal on March 28, 2013. He stayed with the squad for the 2017–18 campaign. He was able to experience many great moments while on the team and led the group through moments that were triumphant for the fans.

After the 2017–18 season, he left the team and signed a new deal with the Dallas Stars. Several months later, On July 1, 2019, Zuccarello, a free agent after leaving the Stars, agreed to a five-year, $30 million deal with the Minnesota Wild. He is a group member and will remain so during the 2024–2025 campaign.
