Akim Aliu was born in Okene, Nigeria to his parents Tai and Larissa. His father, Tai, is a Nigerian who studied in Kyiv on a track and field scholarship, where he met Aliu’s mother, Larissa. He has one brother named Edward whom he has a close relationship.

He identifies as Ukrainian Canadian and affirms that he and his family follow Ukrainian culture. When Aliu was seven years old, his parents decided to relocate the family to Canada and settle in the Toronto region because they were uneasy with the political climate following the fall of the Soviet Union.

Initially, the family struggled as Tai pursued his education to become a computer programmer. Aliu had never played hockey before coming to Canada and spoke Russian and Ukrainian fluently.

He started skating in a house league in the Parkdale neighborhood of Toronto after picking up his first pair of skates at a yard sale. He had a natural talent for the sport, and after a few years, the Windsor Spitfires chose him in the first round of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Akim started playing hockey at age 10 with a set of four sizes too big garage sale skates. After three years, he was a member of the elite Toronto Marlboros Hockey Club. The Windsor Spitfires selected Akim in the first round of the Ontario Hockey League Draft at 16.

He was chosen by the Chicago Blackhawks as the second choice in the second round of the National Hockey League Draft, two years after being selected by the OHL. Akim became professional at 19 with the Rockford Ice Hogs of the American Hockey League.

In 2011, he transitioned to the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Calgary Flames. After a successful four-year OHL career in which he divided time between the Sudbury Wolves and London Knights, Akim became a full-fledged professional.

Akim has played a vital role in the movement for change within the hockey community and society. He has fought for racial equality, diversity, and improved access for BIPOC youngsters to sports, notably the game of hockey.

Akim Aliu signed his debut professional contract, a three-year deal with the Blackhawks, on August 25, 2008. He joined Rockford for two games after the 2007–08 season, five games after the 2008–09 season, and two at the beginning of the 2009–10 AHL season before becoming a full-time member.

He played 48 games and recorded 11 goals and six assists before being sent to the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL late in the season. His playing rights were transferred to the Atlanta Thrashers after the season.

In addition to playing on contract for the Peoria Rivermen and another spell in the ECHL with the Gwinnett Gladiators, Aliu spent the remainder of the 2010–11 campaign with the Atlanta Thrashers’ AHL club, the Chicago Wolves.

The Atlanta Thrashers moved north for the 2011–12 NHL season and changed their name to Winnipeg Jets. He was not a part of the new management’s plans and, after being cut from the roster of Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate, began the season anew with the Colorado Eagles in the ECHL.

Akim Aliu revealed on his Facebook page on May 7, 2022, that Dreamers, his book, will be released on February 7, 2023. DREAMER is for anyone who has ever felt excluded, for anyone who has ever felt “othered,” and for anyone who has resisted giving up despite the odds.

Aliu shares his experience navigating the challenges of adaptation in Canada and Ukraine in this book aimed at children aged eight to twelve.

The book describes the discrimination and hazing he encountered while pursuing his dream of being a professional hockey player. After finding his voice, he eventually forced hockey to address its prejudice against persons of color.
