He negotiated for free agency and higher salary caps while serving as the Executive Director of the NFL Players Association amid the 1987 player strike. The passing of the former NFL guard stunned everyone. Upshaw, who had been given the news that he had pancreatic cancer three days earlier, left behind a lasting legacy of brilliant play and outstanding leadership.

Despite having participated in some well-known games, he is best known for his leadership in the Players’ Association. Richard Berthelsen told The New York Times that “the game is better off for him having played it, and it’s better off for him having led the union than it would have been with any other single individual.”

In 2008, Upshaw passed away at the end of August. People who were close to him were shocked by his passing. He was even expected to attend a conference that the players’ union had planned for early September. Upshaw was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer only three days before his passing, which ultimately caused his demise.

Upshaw is one of the few players from the recruiting class of 2018 still playing on this roster.

Before moving to Ann Arbor, he knew there would be intense competition for his job. Upshaw had much to prove before even taking the field as the No. 561 player in the nation.
