Bret Bielema Career: From An Athlete To A Head Coach

Bielema was an athlete before he shifted to a coaching career; he played tight end and linebacker while attending Prophetstown High School in Prophetstown, Illinois. 

Later, the former athlete played defensive lineman under coach Hayden Fry at the University of Iowa and became the team captain during his senior season; he played for the Iowa team from 1989 to 1992. 

After graduating, he went undrafted in the 1993 NFL Draft, and the Seattle Seahawks cut him off as a free agent. Bret played for the Milwaukee Mustangs and returned to Iowa as a coach in 1994; he served as its linebackers coach from 1994 to 2001.

Then he spent a season as a co-defensive coordinator for the Kansas State Wildcats and joined Wisconsin in 2003, where he got promoted from a defensive coordinator to a head coach.

In 2012, the coach moved to the Arkansas Razorbacks, and the New England Patriots hired him before the 2018 NFL season. And since 2020, he has been coaching for the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.
