His father encouraged him to try again the following day as he walked home after returning in disappointment. Altuve went the other day, showed his birth certificate, and submitted an application for the trial.

Altuve went to a Houston Astros tryout camp in Maracay at the age of 16. He was too short, and the team’s scouts thought he had lied about his age, so they decided not to let him play.

Altuve returned to the camp the next day and showed his birth certificate, encouraged by his father. He received an evaluation from the organization, and on March 6, 2007, they signed him to a contract as an undrafted free agent with a $15,000 bonus after he impressed team executives.

He traveled to the United States in 2008 and hit.284 in 40 games with the Greeneville Astros in the Rookie-level Appalachian League following a great 2007 season in the Venezuelan Summer League, when he hit.343.

He started the 2010 season with the Class A South Atlantic League’s Lexington Legends before moving up to the Class A-Advanced California League’s Lancaster JetHawks.
