The father of Chouinard was a French Canadian mechanic, handyman, and plumber. Yvon and his family relocated to Southern California in 1947 from Maine. Now he has two children, Fletcher and Claire Chouinard 

Early climbing partners of his were Tom Frost and Royal Robbins. He started the Southern California Falconry Club as a young man and was a member of the Sierra Club. His research on falcon aeries introduced him to rock climbing.

He decided to train himself in blacksmithing so he could create his climbing tools, save money, and modify them for the method he was climbing. Eventually, he opened a business.

After purchasing a used coal-fired forge, he began producing hardened steel pitons in Yosemite Valley in 1957. He supported himself by selling pitons out of the back of his car in between sessions of surfing and rock climbing. From 1957 to 1960, Yosemite saw the emergence of big-wall climbing, which was greatly influenced by the advancements in pitons. He established Chouinard Equipment, Ltd. due to the popularity of his pitons.

When Yvon Chouinard was in his 20s, he traveled extensively around North America and the Alps with his pals, spending more than six months each year climbing mountains. Their daily income would be 50 cents. He captured squirrels to eat, and when he stayed longer than permitted by his camping permit, he occasionally had to hide from park officers.

Patagonia has always had a solid commitment to activism and environmental problems. A graduate student working to protect the wildlife at a river close to the company’s Ventura, California offices received office space, a mailbox, and money from the business once.

Midway through the 1970s, Patagonia was on the verge of bankruptcy after offering some subpar shirts for sale at a discount. An accountant then introduced Chouinard to a Los Angeles Mafioso who offered him a loan with a 28% interest rate. He turned down the financing, and Patagonia was able to turn around its failing operations.

Revenue increased from $20 million to $100 million between the middle of the 1980s and 1990. Currently, Patagonia generates $800 million in income annually. Chouinard didn’t understand he had changed into a businessman until that point. But he never wanted to work for a corporation as a drone.

In 1984, Patagonia did away with private offices. In 1986, the business committed to giving small environmental advocacy organizations 10% of its pre-tax income.
