The Infamous Ronald Hammond Marijuana Case And 20 Years In Jail
Ronald Hammond was sentenced to prison for 20 years on a charge of selling Marijuana worth $20 in 2012.
This case is not as absurd as it sounds. Ronald was on probation for his previous act of selling drugs worth $40 at the time he was caught for the second time. This minor incident of him led to 20 years of jail time for Ronald as he broke his probation.
The Background Of Ronald Hammond’s Drugs Case
The judge laughed at the case when Ronald Hammond appeared in court in Baltimore on a charge of possessing 5.9 grams of Marijuana. According to a 2012 case transcript, District Judge Askew Gatewood informed the prosecutor that it was a nonsense decision to jail a man who had Marijuana of that small quantity.
He would feed, wear clothes and enjoy other facilities in the prison with the taxpayers’ money. Hammond was given the same 20-year sentence as Black Guerrilla Family gang boss Tavon White for racketeering conspiracy and attempted murder at the municipal jail.

Gatewood advised Hammond to enter a guilty plea and promised to pardon him with a nominal fine. However, the case would lead to Hammond’s 20-year sentence a few months later. Hammond had been charged with distribution for selling $40 worth of crack cocaine to an undercover police officer while on probation.
Hammond received a sentence of 20 years in that case from Circuit Judge Lynn Stewart-Mays, warning that he would be subject to the whole term if he broke the terms of his probation.
Is Ronald Hammond Still In Prison?
Hammond is in prison and probably will be out in 2028, according to the clause of his arrest. However, his current state is still unknown as he hasn’t appeared in the public eye after that event. Since Hammond’s marijuana arrest, the General Assembly has approved a bill to make possession of up to 10 grams of Marijuana legal.
The House approved a bill to exempt Marijuana from probation violations of Delegates in 2015, but the Senate killed the proposal. However, a change in the law would not apply to Hammond’s case going forward. Possession of fewer than 10 grams of Marijuana carries a maximum fine of $100.

According to a news article in 2015, Ronald was 31 years old. So that makes him 38 years old in 2022. he was expecting a baby with his girlfriend when he was arrested. Many believe that some of the rules could ultimately shatter the life of people, although they have committed harmless crimes. A similar thing happened to Ronald as he only possessed a small amount of weed.
Hammond claimed that he had battled drug use all of his life. He was up without a father while other family members battled drug addiction. He and his siblings were given foster care, and while attending Pikesville High School, he ran with a party-loving gang of students.
Between 2003 and 2008, he was detained nine times, and during that period, he was found guilty four times, two of theft and two of illicit drugs possession. Hammond had never served more than two months in prison regarding his other four offenses.
