What Is Fatwa Meaning In Islam? Who Can Pass A Fatwa?

According to Reza Aslan, a fatwa is a legal pronouncement.

It is the opinion of someone called a mufti, an Islamic legal scholar capable of pronouncing his judgments and views on any legal issue about Islam.

A mufti is generally recognized by hierarchy and also by educational qualities. He is selected by a group of scholars who believe his judgment is just. It also depends on the amount of learning and if it is enough to be a mufti.

So, a mufti needs to have a wide array of knowledge, especially of Islamic cultures, to announce the punishment accordingly. A sentence passed by a mufti is nonbinding, and the process is called ifta.

In Islam, the fatwa has a significant role, especially in the history of the religion. But in the modern era, the word has somewhat evolved and is used against people who defame Islam.

Salman Rushdie Stabbing In Chautauqua Institution: Is It The Fatwa?

Author Salman Rushdie was stabbed during his lecture at the Chautauqua Insitute in New York.

The attack comes 33 years after Iran passed a fatwa on him. The Ayatollah of Iran declared a fatwa on him in 1989 after the publication of The Satanic Verses.

A lot of people are saying that Iran might be behind the stabbing. It comes after the arrest of someone Iran paid $300k to kill John Bolton and the threats to Masih Alinejad in Brooklyn.

So, it’s evident that many people don’t think of it as a coincidence. But no one has taken responsibility for the attack until now. The Iranian government had stated they wouldn’t enforce the fatwa in 1998. So, we don’t know if they are linked to the stabbing.
