Then, in 2006, Tony moved on to West Bromwich Albion, where he won the Football League Championship in 2008 but was relegated from the Premier League the following year.

Ferguson apprehended another burglar in 2003 at his Formby, Merseyside, house. The burglar struck Ferguson, who then reacted. The burglar was taken to the hospital and claimed Ferguson had assaulted him, but police denied this.

Ferguson has received four convictions for assault, including two for headbutting Raith Rovers on the field and one for a fight with a fisherman at a pub in Anstruther.

While the second incident resulted in a £200 fine for striking and kicking a fan using crutches, the first incident resulted in a £100 penalty for headbutting a police officer and a £25 penalty for a Breach of the Peace. For the third offense, he received a probationary period of one year.

He was sentenced to and served a three-month jail term for assault for the 1994 on-field headbutt. Osmo Tapio Räihälä, a Finnish composer, was inspired to create the symphonic poem Barlinnie Nine as a “musical portrait” of Ferguson as a result of Ferguson’s legal issues and incarceration.
