American high school student Kirsten Marina Costas (July 23, 1968- June 23, 1984) was killed by Bernadette Protti in June 1984. She was born in a wealthy house to her parents, Arthur and Berit Costas, and she had a brother named Peter, who grew up in the unassuming Californian suburb of Orinda.
Costas attended Miramonte High School, where she participated in cheerleading and on the varsity swim team. On June 23, 1984, Costas was tricked into attending a dinner for the school’s sorority-like Bob-o-Links by a fake invitation.

Protti later testified that she had intended to bring Costas to the party to make friends with her, but she changed her mind after learning that there would be no dinner provided for the new “Bobbies.”
The girls fought, and Costas ran away, telling Alex and Mary Jane Arnold that her friend had become “weird.” Costas could not reach her parents on the foundation, so Alex Arnold drove her home while watching the Protti family’s Pinto. Arnold witnessed Protti’s assault on Costas while sitting in his car at the Costas’ residence.
