Paolo Macchiarini is a former surgeon and medical researcher for Karolinska University Hospital.
A Swiss-born Italian, Macchiarini spent his childhood in Italy. However, he was hired by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. At the time, he was considered a pioneer in transplant surgery as everyone thought him a visionary.
In 2011, he completed the world’s first-ever synthetic organ transplant as he transplanted plastic trachea with stem cells. His first victim was a graduate student who died two and a half years later.
The same year, another patient completed the surgery and died within months. Also, a 20-year-old got operated on in 2011 and died in 2017. Several patients were treated abroad, and they died too.
As a result, Macchiarini was suspended from the Karolinska Institute and started facing court time. He was let go of all the charges, though.
