Michael was born in 1943 in Nashville, Tennessee, and after college went to work for the United States Department of Defense. He met kindergarten teacher Patricia Sue in West Germany who he later married in 1968. Shortly after, they gave birth to Clayton and Todd.
Following his honorable discharge from the Vietnam War in 1971, he began writing novels and newspaper columns based on his experiences.
