Alex Schachter was among 17 students who were killed in a shootout at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
He would have graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year if that horrifying incident had never happened. The Schachter family has established a UConn scholarship in honor of their son, who was 14.
Who Was Alex Schachter?
He was one of the 17 victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018. Alex had aspirations of attending the University of Connecticut and would have started as a freshman last year.
His family is now hoping to maintain his legacy at UConn. In Alex’s honor, a scholarship program is being launched. The scholarship will be given each year to a student who, like Alex, has always desired to play in the band. They have already put down some seed money and are working to generate enough money.
A UConn fraternity is also honoring Schacter with a posthumous induction. Schachter, who was 14 years old when he was murdered, has already been designated an honorary member of the marching band and received posthumous admission to the school.

Alex’s death was heartbreak for his friends and family. He was one of the brightest kids at his school and was a trombone player in the school marching band. He has always desired to be a member of the UConn marching band. When Alex was five years old, he first learned about UConn.
He was brought to the campus initially to help him remember his mother, Debbie Goldberg Schachter, who passed away when Alex was only four years old. He was buried at the same cemetery where his mother was buried. His funeral was attended by his friends, family members, and high school members.

Who Was Alex Schachter’s Mom? Dad Details
He was born on July 9, 2009, to his parents, Max and Debbie Schachter. Debbie passed away when Alex was four years old because of health conditions. She was a student at the University of Connecticut, which was her son’s dream university.

Several years after Debbie’s death, Max married another woman, Caryn, who loved Alex and his brother like her own children. She also had two daughters with her previous husband, who had died six months after the demise of Debbie.
The two families had complications blending in at the beginning, but after some time, they shared love and were living peacefully in Parkland.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting Details
In Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire on the students and employees of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17 and wounding 17. Cruz entered Building 12, a three-story building with 30 classrooms with 900 kids and 30 teachers.
Cruz entered a hallway and started shooting randomly at kids and teachers while carrying an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle and many magazines. He escaped the scene on foot by disguising himself as one of the other pupils but was swiftly taken into custody in Coral Springs, nearby, an hour later.

Cruz entered a guilty plea on all counts on October 20, 2021, expressing regret for his behavior. The sentence was originally scheduled for January 2022 but was repeatedly postponed partly because of the COVID-19 epidemic. Cruz’s punishment started on July 18, 2022.
