Alexa Flutie Husband Ian Michael Sumner Is A US Marine Veteran And A Football Player
Alexa Flutie and her husband, Ian Sumner, tied the knot in Disneyland on July 22, 2015. Alexa and Ian are in the 7th year of their happy marriage.
After six years of speaking their vows, the couple gave birth to their first child, son Brady Flutie Sumner, on December 20, 2021.
Alexa, the former cheerleader of the San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots, is most famous as the daughter of ex-NFL quarterback Doug Flutie.
After years of cheerleading, she now seems to enjoy the lifestyle of a socialite mom in Melbourne Beach, Florida.
Alexa Flutie Husband Ian Sumner Was In Four Combat Tours
Alexa Flutie’s husband Ian Sumner is a US Marine veteran and a former football player. Sumner served in the US Marines for nine years.
Ian was on four combat tours during his service in the Marines.
He was deployed twice in Afghanistan, once in Iraq, and once in Bahrain from 2006 to 2015. Being in the military stationed in the middle-east during the height of the Iraq War, Sumner has seen heavy action.
Sumner managed to reach the rank of staff sergeant. His duty was to fly in C-130s and provide aerial support to the troops on the ground. “They were our number 1 mission”, said Ian in an interview with News 13, Florida.
In 2015, Ian left the Marines to focus on his new wife and family in Florida after meeting Alex.
After his discharge, Sumner tried his hand at college football and real estate. He says his years of military discipline and working in high-stress situations have helped him in these professional fields.
Ian Sumner Played For The Florida Tech Football Team
Ian Sumner played football for Florida Tech as a defensive lineman starting in 2015.
After coming home from his base, 28-year-old Sumner joined the football team even though he hadn’t played in years. Being the son-in-law of legendary NFL quarterback Doug Flutie also heavily influenced his decision.
Alexa’s father, Doug, played twelve seasons in the National Football League and eight seasons in the Canadian Football League. Just like Ian, Doug also started his football career in college. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1984 for being the best player in college football.
Sumner was the oldest player on the team, which he says intimidated the other players at first. “But as the year goes on and they get to know me, they know when I mean business when I think they shouldn’t be joking around,” he said.
According to the coaches, what separated Ian from the other players, besides his obvious maturity, was his ability to translate his nine years of service in the US Marines to the football pitch.
Steve Englehart, the Florida Tech football team’s coach in 2015, said about Ian, “He’s been able to add his experiences that he’s had in his life, and been able to communicate that with our players”.
He led and communicated well with his teammates on the football team, thanks to his experience of doing the same as a staff sergeant.
Ian showed promise as a great defensive lineman at 6’3″ and 260 pounds and his unwavering discipline. Nowadays, according to his Instagram posts, Sumner seems to be getting into amateur Ice Hockey.
Sumner and Alexa Had A Fairytale Wedding
Ian Sumner and Alexa Flutie had a fairytale wedding in Disney World in Florida almost immediately after his military discharge.
The couple spared no expense in lavish nuptials and had a beach party at the Flutie family home for their wedding party.
Although it is not known exactly when the couple first met or started their relationship, they did have a relationship before Ian’s discharge from the Marines. His decision to leave service was probably influenced by his desire to be with Alexa and start a new family. He both left the army and wed his wife in 2015.
Ian and Alexa, who recently celebrated their 7th anniversary, are soon to celebrate the 1st birthday of their son Brady. This will surely be a very happy holiday for the family.
Alexa visited him in 2014 while he was still working for the country.
One of the highlights of the Sumner-Flutie wedding was Alexa’s brother Dougie Flutie who suffers from autism. The Flutie family has established the “Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, Inc.” in honor of their youngest child.
Ian asked Dougy to be one of the groomsmen for the wedding, which made him extremely happy. “On the wedding day not only did we see our daughter looking absolutely beautiful dressed in a wedding gown, we also saw our son looking so handsome dressed in his first tux. Brady Flutie Sumner Has His Own Instagram Account
Alexa and Ian are parents to son Brady Flutie Sumner who has his own Instagram account.
Considering he is just one years old, his social media page is run by his parents.
There, Alexa and Ian have posted Brady’s journey from being a 7-ounce newborn to a mischievous 1-year-old. His parents take him to football games, pumpkin patches, and swimming. He seemed to especially enjoy his trip to Magic Kingdom.

Brady’s parents are also fairly active on Instagram. They both share glimpses of their personal lives. Alexa shares photos of her with friends and family. Ian mostly shares pictures of Brady.
Given Alexa’s career in cheerleading and choreography, she still maintains an athletic body and often shares pictures of herself modeling in workout clothes and bikinis.
Ian shares her interest in exercise and often posts photos of his bodybuilding journey and gains. Mixed in with photos of his son, he also posts photos of the multiple dogs he loves and owns. Besides his family and his dogs, another thing that also seems very close to Sumner’s heart is his Chevrolet Camaro.
