The NBA has selected Juan Toscano-Anderson as a finalist for its first Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award.

The new annual award, named for six-time NBA champion and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, has five candidates, and Toscano-Anderson is one of them.

He has spoken to more than 3,000 African kids on overcoming challenges, explored biases with sixth graders in San Francisco, and supported Digital Nest, a local nonprofit that seeks to empower Latinx workers.

The organization chosen by the winner of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award will get a contribution of $100,000 from him.

In contrast, the other four finalists will each choose a charity to receive a commitment of $25,000. Toscano-Anderson has decided to donate to the Oakland-based community development nonprofit Homies Empowerment.

On February 22, against Rutgers, Toscano-Anderson played a then-career-high 10 minutes, recording two points, two rebounds, two steals, and his first collegiate blocked shot. Toscano-Anderson grabbed three defensive rebounds in just 11 minutes of action against West Virginia on February 24.
