Hepburn’s parents were married in Batavia, Dutch East Indies, in September 1926. Ruston was employed by a trade organization at the time, but soon after getting married and moving to Europe, he started working for a lending institution, apparently London-based tin merchants MacLaine, Watson & Company.
They relocated to Brussels after spending a year in London since he was required to start a branch office there. The family moved to Linkebeek, a suburb of Brussels, in 1932 after spending three years traveling between Brussels, Arnhem, The Hague, and London.
Hepburn grew up in a wealthy and protected environment. Due to her father’s employment, she traveled between three different countries with her family, enhancing her multicultural upbringing.

Hepburn passed away in her sleep on the night of January 20, 1993. The world over, people expressed their sorrow at the passing of this talented artist and compassionate humanitarian.
Her last wish was to go back to Switzerland, but doctors said she was too ill to travel. Fortunately, a close friend helped to make it possible.
In order to get Hepburn back to Switzerland, fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy lent her a private jet.
