What Happened to Big Papi on The Evening of June 9 in The Dominican Republic?
On the evening of June 9, 2019, Ortiz went to the Dial with Jhoel Lopez, a famous television host working in the Dominican Republic.
It was a Sunday, and the bar was quite full to its capacity. Big Papi, being the most famous person there, was quickly surrounded by fans and supporters for selfies.
After spending nearly two hours at the Dial, a guy approached them from the street, halted a short distance away, and shot Ortiz once in the behind. Lopez was struck in the thigh as it sliced through him.
The gun jammed when the gunman attempted to fire again. Ortiz stumbled to the ground, scattering the terrace audience.
Eliezer Salvador, a businessman who was present at the Dial, hurried Ortiz to a hospital. Afterward, Lopez was brought to the same facility. Even though the bullet narrowly missed his major artery, he healed more swiftly from his injuries than Ortiz, who required surgeries to treat his gallbladder and reconstruct a portion of his intestines.
The Red Sox then flew Ortiz to Boston in an air ambulance, where he had many operations at Massachusetts General Hospital. On July 27, more than a month after the incident, he was discharged from the hospital.

Ferreira Cruz was one of 14 persons detained in relation to the shooting, and the job was estimated to cost $30,000 in total.
