Caitlin stepped out in defense of her stepfather when Michael got arrested. She said to Newsweek, “My mother and Mike had an extremely wonderful relationship & there is no possibility that either of them would ever want any form of harm on the other.”
In a news conference, Caitlin stated. When her loyalties shifted, she worked alongside attorneys and her father to take control of her mother’s fortune within months.

An administrator of her mother’s estate filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Michael Peterson in a civil proceeding in October 2002. Caitlin Atwater & Michael Peterson resolved the wrongful death lawsuit for $25 million on February 1, 2007, & Caitlin was completed on February 1, 2008.
According to her lawyers, Caitlin doesn’t want him to profit from this litigation.
