Bernal has stated that the tragic training accident, along with his ongoing recovery from several fractures and spinal surgery, has impacted his life forever.

He is gradually making a full recovery from his numerous wounds, well aware that his professional racing career would not have survived and that there is a 95% possibility he will become paralyzed.

After two and a half months, his 20 distinct fractures have healed, the nighttime discomfort has gone, and he is back on his bicycle. However, the entire incident has taught him to view life differently.

Additionally, Bernal makes it clear that nobody is to blame for the incident and implies that there is always a risk associated with riding, but that this risk must be accepted by cyclists to advance and be adequately prepared.

He is continuing his treatment and rehabilitation at his home in Colombia for the foreseeable future with the goal of competing at the top of the field for Grand Tours honors once more in the future.

According to reports, Egan Bernal was traveling along the highway perfectly connected to his time trial bike at a speed of about 65 km/h when a bus stopped by the side of the road.

The footage shows that Bernal does not appear to brake at any moment before the impact, on the contrary, he is shown accelerating, indicating that the vehicle’s response is not immediate.

Bernal’s first night at the hospital was spent undergoing a procedure that included a partial assessment of the severity of his wounds before the worst ones were stabilized.

With the Colombian taking part in training at an altitude training camp in Andorra, Egan Bernal’s recovery from injury is moving forward. Bernal was seriously hurt in an accident with a bus in January while practicing at home in Colombia, but he is now making a full recovery.

Bernal may have become paralyzed as a result of his injuries during the training collision in January, according to early reports.

However, only two months after the event, the rider got back on his road bike and shared images of himself on social media rejoicing. He assured Cycling Weekly that there are currently no plans for Bernal to resume competing.

Before the January collision, he renewed his contract with Ineos Grenadiers for five years, keeping the Colombian with the team through the end of 2026.
