She was born on June 20, 1906, at 5 Leam Lane in Tyne Dock, South Shields, County Durham, England, as Catherine Ann Davies. As a kid, she was known as “Katie.” 

She relocated to East Jarrow, which would later become the scene for The Fifteen Streets, one of her best-known books.

The writer was raised by her grandparents, Rose and John McMullen, as the illegitimate child of an alcoholic called Kate Fawcett. She grew up believing her unmarried mother was her sister.
