What Happened To Conway Utterbeck?

Travis Hittson killed Conway Utterbeck during a weekend leave.

Utterbeck was shot following a night of drinking. He was on a trip to central Georgia to visit the family of a crewmate, Edward Vollmer. 

After killing Utterbeck, Hittson ate at a nearby Waffle House. He and Vollmer dismembered his body with the help of a steak knife and chainsaw. They displaced the remains of Conway at a different location.

According to the court records, Utterbeck’s torso was buried in a shallow grave in the woods. His hands, head, and feet were kept in the trunk of Vollmer’s car and shipped to Pensacola, Florida. Later, the remains were discarded in the Florida Panhandle.

Conway Utterbeck Murder Case & Charges On Travis Hittson

On April 5, 2016, Travis Hittson was found guilty of killing Conway Utterbeck, age 20. He was also accused of holding a gun while committing a crime, theft by taking, and aggravated assault.

Hittson told police in his confession: ‘I had no emotion or nothing on my face; I know I didn’t.’ He further described Vollmer as ‘paranoid.’

He added that Vollmer had extended an invitation to the other two for a weekend staycation. After a night of drinking, Vollmer persuaded Hittson that they had to assassinate Utterbeck before he could “get us.”

At Vollmer’s direction, Hittson hit the other men with an aluminum baseball bat and shot Utterbeck in his head.

After the killing, the two men went to a Waffle House and returned to the home to dismantle Utterback.

Consequently, Vittson was given the death penalty in 1993 after being found guilty of murder and three additional offenses. Similarly, Vollmer received a life sentence after being found guilty of murder.

Travis Hittson was executed on Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at the state diagnostic prison in Georgia.

The 45-year-old was given a fatal injection in 2016 at a state prison in Jackson. He was the seventh execution of the year in the United States and the 39th inmate put to death by lethal injection.

Just before death, Hittson had accepted his final prayers and recorded his last statement. When the custodian asked him if he had anything to say, Hittson replied: ‘No sir, I’m alright.’

Meanwhile, Vollmer made a plea deal with prosecutors and was sentenced to prison with parole. However, he was denied parole in 2014 and was pushed to be reviewed in 2024.

Conway Utterbeck was buried at the Stockton, Cedar County, Missouri. His father, Joel “Norman” Utterbeck, lost him early. It has been 29 years; Utterbeck’s brother, Benjamin Scott Utterbeck, also passed away last year.
