Collingwood’s Senior Coach Craig Mcrae Has Changed The Way They Play

Craig Mcrae returned to the Collingwood Football Club in September 2021 after being hired as senior coach for the 2022 AFL season.

Craig, a three-time champion with the Brisbane Lions, has been named the AFL team’s next head coach to take over for Nathan Buckley.

He was only the club’s third full-time coach this century when the Magpies announced his hiring on a three-year contract. He worked as Hawthorn’s forward’s coach this season after serving as Collingwood’s assistant from 2011 to 2015.

After Chris Scott, Brad Scott, Michael Voss, and Justin Leppitsch, Craig is now the fifth player from the Lions’ premiership era to hold the position of senior coach.

Craig Mcrae worked with the Richmond Football Club as a player development coach in 2007. When Richmond’s former coach and fellow AFL assistant Jade Rawlings was named interim head coach at Richmond in the middle of the 2009 AFL season, Mcrae accepted the head coaching role at Coburg, a VFL associate club of Richmond.

Before joining Collingwood in 2011 as head of development, Mcrae accepted a development coach post with the Brisbane Lions in 2010. He stayed with the team for five years.

In 2016, he returned to Richmond and took on the roles of head coach of the club’s VFL reserves team and an assistant coach in the AFL.

He led the team to a losing grand final in 2017 before winning a premiership in 2019. That same year, he also won assistant coach of the year honors from the AFL coaches association and the VFL.

Craig started working as the forward-line coach for the Hawthorn Football Club in 2021.
