Commonly known as Dave Trimble, he held the position of First Minister of Northern Ireland from 1998 to 2002 and served as the UUP’s leader from 1995 to 2005.
The politician then held the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Upper Bann from 1998 to 2007, as well as Member of Parliament (MP) for Upper Bann.

The Ulster Unionist Party is one that his son, Nicholas, belongs to. In 2016, Nicholas Trimble was coopted to take Alexander Redpath’s place as the Downshire West representative on the Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council.
He acknowledged in July 2019 that his gay daughter Vicky’s marriage to her partner Rosalind Stephens in Scotland in 2017 “caused” him to reconsider his stance on same-sex unions and partnerships after he had previously opposed them.
