Diagnosis: Terry Francona Illness and Health Update 2022

Francona hopes to be nearing the end of his crutch-using time after recovering from surgeries on his hip and left foot for the past three months.

He had his nine-week X-ray on his foot (which was fixed after a staph infection he was diagnosed with in January) to ascertain how many more weeks he will have to keep all weight off of his left leg. He’ll be able to plan the remainder of his recovery process for this off-season once that report is received. In a Zoom meeting with local media on Friday, Francona stated, “He’s been going to therapy; he’s trying to get healthy.” He is at work. He is attempting to position himself to be indeed enthusiastic about baseball.

He adores what he does and the environment in which he does it, but he wants to be able to take pleasure in it. He has thus put in a lot of effort. And once he gets rid of these dreadful crutches, he’ll be able to work harder.

Francona received permission to travel back to his Arizona house, where he could continue his physical therapy. He underwent the procedure on his left foot to insert eight pins and a rod shortly after, and his recovery from the hip operation at the end of July was quick and painless. 

Although Francona has never downplayed how challenging this process has been, he has remained upbeat about his return to baseball in 2022 as his recovery moves forward. And returning to Arizona’s warmer weather has only boosted his optimism. It’s much simpler now that he was born in Arizona. Even if he lounges around, he can sit outside in the sunshine, read a book, go swimming, and engage in some light exercise, even if he is hobbling.

The health problems that have plagued Terry Francona recently caused the 2021 season for the Cleveland Indians to end early. The Indians then announced that Francona would resign as team manager for the rest of the campaign so he could attend to additional medical concerns. Francona was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic. He had hip replacement surgery in 2021. Francona had another procedure to place a rod in his right foot five to six weeks later. For ten weeks without putting any weight on his foot, a new walking boot was worn for six months.

Since having surgery to treat a staph infection in February 2021, he has been using a walking boot on the affected foot. His hip was made worse by the walking boot to the point where hip replacement surgery was required. Due to a digestive problem that kept him in the hospital for weeks, Francona only managed 14 of the Indians’ 60 games last season.

Then, on January 27, 1990, Leah Francona, their third child, was born. Their family was finally complete in 1995 with the birth of Jamie Francona, their youngest child.

Her other daughter, Leah, is happily married to Michael Rice and has two children, Olivia Rice and Henry Rice.

Jamie, Jacque’s youngest child, had also enrolled in the Naval Academy and had even participated in high school volleyball. She has been happily married to her long-lasting boyfriend and love, Landon Miller, since May 30, 2021.
