Cose was the youngest editorial page writer employed by a major Chicago daily newspaper when he started writing for the Chicago Sun-Times at nineteen in 1970.
In 1972, while still employed at the Sun-Times, he earned his B.A. in psychology from the University of Illinois. After that, in 1978, Cose received his M.A. in science, technology, and public policy from George Washington University.

Cose began contributing editorials and columns to the Detroit Free Press in 1979. Later, in 1981, he was awarded a fellowship by the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences. Cose joined USA Today in 1982 as an exceptional writer, and in 1983 he started a three-year stint as the president of the Institute for Journalism Education at the University of California, Berkeley.
Before transferring to the New York Daily News, where he served as an editorial page editor in 1991, he held a fellowship with the Gannett Center for Media Studies at Columbia University in New York City in 1987. Cose joined Newsweek as a contributing editor in 1993 and worked there until 2010.
