According to a Department of Justice official, both were detained on Tuesday morning and are facing allegations that range from bribery to money laundering. To solicit business from the General Assembly and siphon off kickbacks for personal gain, the prosecution alleges that the couple formed a murky political consultancy firm managed by Cothren and operating under the fictitious name of Matthew Phoenix.
The claims are connected to former Representative Robin Smith, who resigned and then entered a plea of guilty to a single count of wire fraud last spring as part of a deal with federal prosecutors. The accusations represent a new low in Casada’s shocking decline from one of the most influential Republicans in the General Assembly.
Amid a texting scandal involving sexually graphic and racial communications with his former chief of staff, Cothren, he abruptly resigned from the brief speakership in 2019.
