On Wednesday evening at the 2022 ESPY Awards, Dick Vitale collected the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. He delivered an emotional yet powerful speech after accepting the award.

“Cancer doesn’t discriminate, and it comes after all,” he said. “It doesn’t matter race or religion, and it will bring you to your knees. There’s only one way to beat it, my friends; we have to raise dollars and give oncologists a fighting chance.”

He also addressed that young children and newborns should not undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment. People at the function applauded him and his message.

Dick Vitale, a veteran ESPN commentator, has been documenting his struggle with Melanoma cancer over the past few months through his social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook.

He discusses with Sportico the motivation for his decision to invite others on his journey and his fight to eradicate childhood cancer.

Vitale first revealed his illness in October 2020. The experienced college basketball analyst for ESPN disclosed in October that he had been diagnosed with lymphoma, marking his second cancer diagnosis in three months.

The 83-year-old began chemotherapy and treatment, missing the beginning of the season. Still, Vitale did make a sad, emotional comeback for a game between Gonzaga and UCLA in November, the top-ranked team at the time.

Since practically the beginning of the network’s existence, Vitale has worked for ESPN, and he called the first college basketball season that the network broadcast. 2008 saw his enshrinement in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Dick Vitale Is Blind In His Left Eye, Injury Details

Before his eye surgery in July 2018, Dick Vitale could not properly see from his left eye. His left vision is impaired, and he had to focus more on his right eye to look at something very closely.

When he was three or four years old, the incident happened. He remembered that he stabbed a pencil in his eyes as a child, yet a definitive declaration of what exactly occurred to him hasn’t appeared online.

The eye developed an infection over time, became worse, and was finally unusable. Vitale underwent many eye surgeries over the years to restore the function of his left eye, and in 2018, the procedure was ultimately successful, restoring his vision in both eyes.

Is Dick Vitale In Hospital?

Dick Vitale is not in hospital for now, but he has to make occasional visits to check the condition of his illness.

His doctor Dr. Zeitals visits him every two weeks to monitor his health and progress in New York. He further explained to everyone to extend the prayer to patients to give them hope. “I laid in the hospital, and it was those messages that picked me up in the darkest moment.” He said it gives patients a boost and hope in fighting the disease.

During some of his time in the hospital, Valvano’s close buddy Vitale recalled how much letters from his ESPN coworkers, both on and off the air, and several other currents and past college basketball coaches meant to him.

Rick Barnes, the Texas manager, would send him a personalized prayer each day, he observed. In his speech, Vitale begged listeners to show them the same love and compassion that had enabled him to stand here today.
