After getting beaten up by Craig in prison, Phil is already very weak. His only friend, Ravi is in solitary confinement, and Craig and his goons are coming to “kill” him.
So, it was just a matter of time. The episode shows that Craig and his men beat Phil Mitchell brutally and the guards were seen carrying a body. Later, his ex-wife, Sharon called the prison and got the news of his death. It ends with Sharon sobbing while melancholy music plays in the background.

Actor Steve McFadden Illness Rumors: Is He Sick?
Phil Mitchell is played by the veteran actor, Steve McFadden. He has been in the show since 1990.
There are several rumors that the actor is ill which is the reason behind the death of his character in EastEnders. However, such rumors are yet to be confirmed.
