She started going as Assata Shakur after graduating and temporarily joined the Black Panther Party.
She faced many criminal accusations between 1971 and 1973, leading to a multi-state search. Shakur was taken into custody in May 1973 after being injured during a firefight on the New Jersey Turnpike.
Werner Foerster, James Harper of the New Jersey State Police, Sundiata Acoli, and Zayd Malik Shakur of the BLA were also involved in the gunfight.

When Joanne Deborah Chesimard escaped jail in 1979, she served a life sentence for murder.
She has been living quietly in Havana for the past 30 years, occasionally hosting guests in her small apartment, writing, and seldom ever attracting attention to herself.
In other words, even by FBI norms, Shakur was elevated to the terrorist category for engaging in often protected activities, such as speaking and writing.
In a piece I wrote for WBEZ at the time, I assumed that adding Shakur to the FBI’s list could have been a tactic to get Cuba to free American Agency for International Development employee Alan Gross.

This occurred 19 months ago. Then, President Barack Obama claimed that the two nations had been in covert negotiations for 18 months when he declared that the U.S. and Cuba were attempting to improve ties and that Gross would be released.
Unsurprisingly, Shakur is once again making headlines. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has demanded Shakur’s extradition after she was found guilty of killing one state policeman and critically injuring another.
However, Shakur won’t return to New Jersey or any other location on American territory. The reason isn’t only because the United States and Cuba don’t have an extradition agreement.
Both nations have a moral and unethical incentive to permit Shakur to pass away in Havana through natural causes.
Joanne Deborah Chesimard Wanted After Escaping From Prison. Who Were The Victims?
Joanne Chesimard, currently serving a life sentence for murder, is sought for breaking out of the Clinton, New Jersey jail.
On May 2, 1973, two New Jersey State Police officers arrested Chesimard and two companions for driving infractions on the New Jersey Turnpike.
Chesimard belonged to the Black Liberation Army, an extreme revolutionary organization. Chesimard was wanted at the time for her involvement in several crimes, including bank robbery.

Chesimard and her cronies shot at the troops. Among the soldiers. In an execution-style shooting, one was shot and killed at close range while the other was injured. Chesimard ran away, but he was eventually caught.
In the gunfight, one of her accomplices was murdered, while the other was captured and is still being held. Chesimard was convicted of first-degree murder, violence on a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault in 1977.
She received life in a prison sentence. Chesimard was born on November 2, 1979.
Before being discovered in Cuba in 1984, the inmate broke out of jail and lived underground. Therefore, she could still be residing in Cuba right now.
