In the last kilometer of Stage 19, the 29-year-old broke away from the peloton to pass the race’s top three finishers in Cahors—Fred Wright, Alexis Gougeard, and Jasper Stuyven.

Wright followed Alexis Gougeard and Jasper Stuyven in sliding off the front with 35 kilometers remaining after the first break of the day had been caught, and they continued to stay free until the flamme rouge.

It was a disorganized pursuit even as the peloton closed in, and Wright stomped on the pedals as the drag to the finish line got underway, briefly pulling ahead of those behind him.

When Mads Pedersen powered away from him on stage 13 in Saint-Etienne, he was in sight of the finish line. It was a similar tale here as Laporte, surging out of the pack, carried greater pace on the climb and rode away, winning from Jasper Philipsen and Alberto Dainese while Wright faded.
