Before retiring in 2006, Sean’s father Faaloloi worked in a steel mill for 35 years at the Inland Steel Company. His mother worked in a can factory.
Manaea has two older brothers, one of whom is a half-brother from his father’s first marriage. His older brother Dane is a member of the US Navy.

While at Indiana State, he was rated the finest talent in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2012.
Manaea was picked 34th overall by the Kansas City Royals in the 2013 MLB draft, and he was traded to the Athletics during the 2015 season.
In 2016, he made his Major League Baseball debut, and on April 21, 2018, he threw a no-hitter. Manaea was dealt with the Padres before the 2022 season.

His father is a full-blooded Samoan, and his mother is an Indiana native.
He was 22 when he visited his father’s homeland, American Samoa, in 2014. Although he had hoped to feel closer to the culture his father had passed down to him and his brothers, Sean felt a little alienated.
The knowledge his father had given them were not enough for him to feel at ease watching full-blooded Samoans conduct themselves.

Since his trip to Samoa, he has discovered a means to feel closer to his ancestral home. He has Samoan symbols tattooed on his right arm by tattoo artist Sulu’ape RiccyBoy.
