Snowmobilers in Saugatuck discovered cross-country skis and a bag abandoned the day after his journey to Lake Michigan and alerted law enforcement to a missing individual. They quickly realized that Steve was the owner of the items in the pack, and an immediate search and rescue effort was started.

In February 1978, Steven Kubacki was enrolled at Hope College, a small, private Christian institution on the southeast shore of Lake Michigan.
He had left alone on a cross-country skiing trip to stay for one or two days, but he never returned. Beyond the lake’s edge, he left a 200-yard footprint track in the snow.

Investigators concluded that Kubacki died beneath a thick layer of unbroken ice since there was no other evidence after the one-way trail abruptly ended. The Lake Michigan Triangle, which extends from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, through Ludington, Michigan, and south to Benton Harbour, is where Steven Kubacki went missing in the Michigan region of the United States.
