Tetsuya Yamagami is the shooter of ex-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He was arrested on the morning of Friday, July 8, 2022, in the city of Nara. The suspected shooter tried to run from the scene but was detained by security. He is a 41-year-old man, believed to be a local resident. 

Shinzo Abe, who served from 2006 to 2007 and 2012 to 2020, was shot while attending a campaign event. Following the incident, the former prime minister reportedly experienced heart arrest and lost consciousness. At the same time, a picture of the Police holding the suspect has gone viral on social media. So, Who is Tetsuya Yamagami?

Is Tetsuya Yamagami Chinese Or Japanese?

Tetsuya Yamagami is a Japanese citizen who shot at Shinzo Abe. The suspected shooter is a resident of Nara City.

It is not known whether he has a Chinese origin or not. Since he is believed to be a local resident, also the news has confirmed him to be of Japanese nationality. After the shooting, some netizens were accusing minorities like Chinese or Zainichi Koreans.

A photo of Yamagami being manhandled by the police has gone viral on social media. He is dressed in a grey shirt and chinos. The suspect is wearing glasses and a medical mask. He has black hair and as reported, appears to be a middle-aged man.

It is unclear why he openly shot former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Some news sites have reported that he was “dissatisfied” with Abe. The developing story is yet to be addressed by the Japanese media. A witness has also claimed that the shooter did not try to run.

Who Is Tetsuya Yamagami, The Suspected Abe Shooter? 

Shinzo Abe’s killer Tetsuya Yamagami is a former military man. He served as a former maritime self-defense force member.

The Wio News notes that Yamagami had been in the service till 2005, a year before Abe’s first tenure as the Prime Minister.

As an army veteran, Yamagami was a skilled shooter. He had used a self-modified shotgun for the assassination. However, the Sasaki Yohei of Dainihon Ryoyukai has stated that the shot fired does not match that of a shotgun. Also, the number of smoke was very large for it to be fired from an ordinary gun.  Witnesses heard a “dry, popping sound” while Abe was on his way for the speech, as per News18. 

According to the First Post, he was totally dissatisfied with the ex-Prime Minister. Moreover, he did not try to escape after the shootout. A witness has recalled that Yamagami remained on the same spot from where he fired the shots. He was caught then by Abe’s guard.

Yamagami was immediately taken into custody after the attempted murder. The investigators raided the suspect’s house and they discovered barrelled firearms similar to the ones used for the assassination.
