Only a select few proud fathers have commented on their son’s triumph, including Geoff Wightman.
Geoff was a stadium commentator while Jake was about to become the first British runner to win the 1500m in 39 years. He was visibly affected as his kid beat his competitors to the finish line while all eyes were on him. His voice radiated across Hayward Field as his emotions overcame him.
Geoff, with excitement, said: “That’s my son, and he’s world champion.” The proud father was full of tears and said he was preparing his son for this. He said: ‘I’ve been doing his school sports day since he was about 11 because my wife’s been his PE teacher.’

After the race, Jake said he was glad to make his father proud. The World Champion said: ‘I’m glad he showed some emotion!’,
‘I’ve been with him since I was like 14 probably as a coach and before that my mum said less stuff.’
He further said: ‘It’s a special moment for him as well. For him to be part of my journey to get to this point and actually be part of the actual race itself is so unique that I hope he can celebrate as much as he likes.’
Jake Wightman Scottish Dad: Who Is Geoff Wightman?
Geoff Wightman is the coach and trainer of his son Jake Wightman. He is a former 2:13:17 marathon runner.
After his retirement, Geoff also took on the media work as a commentator and host. He is a famous voice in the sport who also commentated for the Olympics crowd. Geoff also reported England’s victory in the 5km race in early February 2020.

According to the run together. co.UK website, Wightman was the 8th representing England in the 1990 Commonwealth Games Marathon. Thus, Geoff bases his training on his old experiences.
The retired athlete has since long been preparing his son for the sports.

Geoff Wightman is married to Susan Julia Wightman, a former female long-distance runner from Great Britain. His wife was as excited as him after their son became the World Champion.

According to Julia Wightman’s Wikipedia, she became sixth in the 10,000 meters at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. Her personal best is 2:31:33.
The family of Geoff Wightman also consists of Jake’s twin brother, Sam, and his sister, Martha.
