The captain of the Chicago Blackhawks is Jonathan Toews, and the Colorado Avalanche’s Devon Toews is a rising star. They both won the Stanley Cup in their professional careers and even fought on the ice!

Tammy Toews and Werner Toews welcomed Devon into the world on February 21, 1994, in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Toews won the 2013 BCHL Championship and the Western Canada Cup while playing for the Surrey Eagles for two seasons.

Toews signed up with the University of North Dakota in 2005 and joined the school’s hockey team as a center. He attracted attention for his offensive play, and the struggling Blackhawks, one of the “Original Six,” selected him third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft.

He left North Dakota after his second year of college to pursue a career in hockey. Toews was transferred to the Sound Tigers after attending the Islanders’ training camp ahead of the 2018–19 campaign. On January 3, 2019, Toews played in his fifth NHL game and scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime victory over the Chicago Blackhawks to earn his first NHL point.

At the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in 2005, Toews led Canada West to a gold medal. In the championship match, he scored the game-winning goal in a 3-1 victory over Canada Pacific.

 He earned the title of tournament MVP and finished with 12 points, placing first in the scoring for the competition. Toews was the youngest player on the Canadian junior team, competing in the 2006 World Junior Championships during his draft year.

Toews made his country’s senior team debut at the 2007 World Championships. That same year, after just his second season of collegiate hockey, he recorded seven points in nine games while competing against primarily professional players (at the time of selection, Toews had not yet turned professional). Toews received the Order of the Buffalo Hunt, a distinction bestowed by the Province of Manitoba in recognition of athletic accomplishments, on June 29, 2007, for his participation in the junior and senior world championships.
