Borje Salming Had Three Wives: Margitta, Katarina & Pia Salming

Borje Salming married his first wife, Margitta Salming, in the early seventies. They had two children.

The pair began their voyage to the journey of their relationship a few years prior to the birth of their first baby. In 1993, the newly wedded couple arrived in Toronto before the start of the season.

Borje and Margitta spent most of their time in Toronto, Canada. It was there that Borje, a former ice hockey defenseman, played for 16 seasons, beginning in 1973 and ending in 1989. 

They had their first baby, a son named Anders Salming, in November 1974. Borje and his wife Margitta plainly overjoyed as they became parents for the very first time. He was only 23 at that time. 

After moving across the ocean to be with him, Margitta pursued a job in the fashion industry while her future husband was making his mark in the National Hockey League. Margitta professionally worked as a designer for baby clothing wears.

Moreover, she utilized her knowledge of fashion design to branch out into interior design. Margitta planned the couple’s first Canadian residence, an eight-story house in Toronto’s Park Gardens neighborhood.

After purchasing a property in the mid-1970s, the couple decorated it to reflect their Scandinavian heritage. Following Borje’s retirement from the NHL, his wife Margitta and he was relocated to Sweden. But not long after they returned to their country of origin, in 1993, the couple decided to divorce one another and end their relationship.

Borje Salming and his second wife, Katarina Pettersson Salming, parented two kids.

They ended on good terms and still have a close affinity. 

The three times NHL All-Star, Borje, dated Katarina a few years after he was separated from his first wife, Margitta. They were married and had two children, a son, and a daughter, together. Their daughter’s name is Bianca, and their son is Rasmus.

When the news of Borje suffering from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) went public in 2021, his ex-wife Katarina, 58, was among the first to react and meet him in person. 

Even though the pair had their relationship run ended 15 years ago, they are still close to each other. Katarina and her daughter Bianca visited Borje in his residence following the news. 

“Then we completely broke up all three. We sat in the car for a long time and just cried. We didn’t do anything else; you just sit there and cry.” Katarina said.’

Their children Bianca and Rasmus have spent significant time with Katarina and Borje in the house where they grew up in Vaxholm, just outside Stockholm. And to see their father suffer must be painful for them to watch.

Fortunately, Bianca has sports, and she uses them as an outlet for her feelings. But, on the other hand, Rasmus may keep his sentiments to himself more than anybody else.

Borje Salming’s third wife, Pia Salming, is a police officer.

After two failed marriages, Borje Salming married Pia Salming in 2016. Born on November 13, 1967, the 55-year-old Pia and NHL legend Borje Salming began seeing each other some 17 years ago. It was after he broke up with his second wife, Katarina. 

However, Pia and Borje tied the knot six years ago in 2016. He is the stepfather to two daughters, Sara And Lisa. They are Pia’s children from her previous relationship. They became a couple after meeting on a voyage across the land Sea and have remained so ever since. 

Pia, 55, is a fierce woman who never dares to fail. She used to work as a professional hairdresser, just like her mother but changed her profession completely to become a police officer. 

Even though she’s wanted to join the police force since she was a kid, Pia went in a different direction professionally. As a young girl, Pia frequented the hair shop her mother owned. She felt at home there and made the same choice as her mother.

“I have always loved my job as a hairdresser and never really felt that I wanted to quit,” Pia said.

Pia joined high school at age 46 and could make it through her schoolwork even though she shed many tears. Now she proudly embraces the police uniform and the duty she has. She set an example for those who are unwilling to follow their dream because of their age “Age is just a number.”
