Chuba Hubbard was raised by his parents, Candace Hubbard (mother) and Lester Yearwood (stepfather).

Although his mother initially had reservations, Chuba Hubbard’s parents supported his professional endeavors.

Hubbard, the youngest of four children, was born in Edmonton in 1999. The 23-year-old claims he never felt alone at home because his mother and stepfather were always there for him, even though he had a difficult childhood due to his father leaving him when he was three.

The linebacker has said: “My mom and stepdad have always been there for me. They’ve always encouraged me to follow my dreams, so I’ve never felt a void.”

He acknowledges that while he was growing up, his mother, Candace, was gentle with him, and his two brothers provided him with fierce love. He has said: “They got me ready for the real world. I wasn’t allowed to cry over the little things.”

Hubbard grew up in Edmonton with his parents and later relocated to Sherwood Park, Alberta, where he went to the Bev Facey Community High School. He ran for 6,880 yards on 458 attempts throughout his three seasons, scoring 82 touchdowns.

The linebacker then decided to attend Oklahoma State University and play NCAA football there.

Hubbard also participated in 13 games in 2018 after redshirting his first season at Oklahoma State in 2017. He gained 740 yards on 124 rushes and scored seven touchdowns. 

In contrast, Hubbard was chosen by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round of the NFL Draft 2021 (126th overall).

Chuba Hubbard did not receive support from his biological father. Instead, a single mother presented him with every type of parental support.

His mother, Candace, had to work day and night to raise her four children. She pursued nursing school and worked long nights for food and money. Similarly, his stepfather, a film director and a cinematic Videographer, supported him.

The support a player receives from his family is critical. This also holds for the support that a player’s family gives them as they rise through the ranks and pursue their aspirations of playing at the highest level off the field. Last year, Candace Hubbard was named Football Canada’s 2021 “Mom of the Year.” 

After receiving the awards, the proud mom said: “He would come into the house every day and be ‘can I play football, Mom?’ and I [said] ‘no way, nobody’s touching or roughing you up. She continued: “Chuba wasn’t huge at that time, and I was used to seeing him running track, and there’s no contact at all, so, yeah [the contract] was a concern for me,” 

Candace also claims that initially, she did not believe that Chuba would make a footballer. However, as time subsided, she admitted her dearest son to a football academy at the age of nine years. 

The proud mother said: “I didn’t want to send him away where I couldn’t watch him. His high school years were very important and so I’m glad that I kept him home and was able to monitor him and he still had his coaches and his football, and all the supports that he needed here which I think is very important to all these children,”

Presently, Candace and Lester Yearwood reside in Sherwood Park, Alberta.

Chuba Hubbard has three siblings whose mother raised them, working very hard. He has two brothers and sisters.

The linebacker had said when his parents were away; his sister kept him out of trouble. But, he said: “She would always threaten to tell my mom if I was thinking about doing something stupid – and it always worked.”

Hubbard has a sister named Adaeze Hubbard. He is very close to his only sibling, as seen in his Instagram photos.

Adaeze is also married. Her husband is a basketball player raising a child named Aliyah. She celebrates her birthday on April 23.

Chuba’s two brothers played basketball during their high school times, but he chose the track over the hardwood.

Among the NFL star’s other family members is Cecile Hubbard, Chuba’s grandmother, who worked as a nurse for almost 40 years before retiring on April 20, 2018.

Hubbard is also very close to his friend Simon Timmer, whose mother was the track and field coach. 

However, the linebacker credits Marcus Arroyo, the running back coach at Oklahoma State, as a deciding factor for his career.

He says: “You can tell who you want to spend the next four years with,” he says. “You can tell if they’re really into you or if you’re just another piece to the program. Coach Arroyo came to the school and showed so much interest in me. He’d walk in and just yell, ‘CHUBA!’ and then give me a big hug.”
