At the age of 80, Canadian lawyer and activist Clayton Charles Ruby passed away. He was an expert in civil rights, criminal justice, and constitutional law.
He shared a partnership with Marlys Edwardh at the law firm Ruby & Edwardh from 1976 to 2008. He has been a partner with the Toronto, Ontario law office of Ruby Shiller Chan Hasan since 2007.
When the Church of Scientology and nine of its members were on trial in 1991 for stealing documents about Scientology from the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, the Canadian Mental Health Association, two police forces, and other institutions, Ruby was a member of the legal team that the Church of Scientology used to defend itself and the nine members.

During the Royal Commission, he served as one of Donald Marshall Junior’s attorneys. Ruby, who was born in Toronto, Ontario, graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1963.
After earning his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto in 1969, he was admitted to the bar the following year. In 1973, he received his Master of Laws from the University of California, Berkeley.
In a well-known conflict of interest case in 2012, Ruby defended a plaintiff who sought to oust Mayor Rob Ford of Toronto. The plaintiff and Ruby prevailed. After then, the mayor issued an appeal. Ford maintained her position after winning the appeal on January 25, 2012.

The Superior Court of Justice of Ontario’s Madam Justice Harriet Sachs is wed to Clayton Ruby. We are devastated to hear of the passing of Clayton Ruby’s father, Louis Ruby, publisher of the crusading Toronto tabloid and scandal newspaper Flash Weekly, which lasted from the late 1930s to the 1970s.
Ruby leaves behind his children Emma and Kate as well as his wife Harriet Sachs, a judge on the Superior Court of Ontario.

He wrote several legal textbooks and was an expert in criminal, constitutional, administrative, and civil rights law. Ruby played a significant role in the fight for LGBTQ rights in Canada. When he defended Michelle Douglas, who was expelled from the Canadian Forces in 1989.
Douglas filed a lawsuit, and as a result, the military’s anti-gay and anti-lesbian policies were abolished.
