He won five times in Australia’s most famous auto race, the Bathurst 1000, and was the 2007 series champion with the HSV Dealer Team. Tander came in second place in the 2000 championship, advancing to the final round, where he was defeated by Mark Skaife, who has since won the title five times. 

The racing driver had little success after helping Jason Bargwant to win the renowned Bathurst 1000 race in 2000. Tander was expected to drive the Monaro for GRM in the 2003 Australian Nations Cup Championship, but he focused on V8 Supercars instead, giving Nathan Pretty the wheel.

It was reported in November 2004 that Garth would join the HSV Dealer Team on a 3-year deal beginning in 2005. He joined the HSV Dealer Team in 2005 and was paired with Rick Kelly, a two-time Bathurst winner.

Gisbergen won his second championship following the team’s triumph in 2020, and Tander now has a record-breaking five Bathurst 1000 victories among his 100 career podium finishes.

Six safety car deployments in the opening 57 laps of one of the most dramatic and incident-filled races in recent memory were accompanied by early-race rain that soaked some of the course.

In the last race, two more safety cars were replaced by Van Gisbergen’s lead and made the race a sprint finish.

Tander was generally expected to drive the Monaro for GRM in the 2003 Australian Nations Cup Championship, but he focused on V8 Supercars instead, giving Nathan Pretty the wheel. 

He stayed with Garry Rogers Motorsport in 2004, but it was revealed early in the season that he wouldn’t be joining them in 2005. Having a DNF in Race 1 and being unable even to start Race 2, his season got off to a bad start at Adelaide.
