Garth Tander: Who Is Shane Van Gisbergen Co Driver? Partner In Bathurst

Shane Van Gisbergen’s co-driver is Garth Tander, a multiple-championship-winning Australian motor racing driver. He competes in Virgin Australia.

He won five times in Australia’s most famous auto race, the Bathurst 1000, and was the 2007 series champion with the HSV Dealer Team. Tander came in second place in the 2000 championship, advancing to the final round, where he was defeated by Mark Skaife, who has since won the title five times. 

The racing driver had little success after helping Jason Bargwant to win the renowned Bathurst 1000 race in 2000. Tander was expected to drive the Monaro for GRM in the 2003 Australian Nations Cup Championship, but he focused on V8 Supercars instead, giving Nathan Pretty the wheel.

It was reported in November 2004 that Garth would join the HSV Dealer Team on a 3-year deal beginning in 2005. He joined the HSV Dealer Team in 2005 and was paired with Rick Kelly, a two-time Bathurst winner.

After six races in the 2006 V8 Supercar season, Tander had the championship lead under his control. 

Shane van Gisbergen won the 2022 Bathurst 1000, demonstrating his superiority over all other Supercar drivers. Despite starting from sixth on the grid, Shane and his co-driver Garth Tander were in the lead for most of the race.

Van Gisbergen repeated his success from 2020, and in the past seven Bathurst 1000 races, he finished outside the top five.

Gisbergen won his second championship following the team’s triumph in 2020, and Tander now has a record-breaking five Bathurst 1000 victories among his 100 career podium finishes.

Six safety car deployments in the opening 57 laps of one of the most dramatic and incident-filled races in recent memory were accompanied by early-race rain that soaked some of the course.

In the last race, two more safety cars were replaced by Van Gisbergen’s lead and made the race a sprint finish.

Nevertheless, by teaming up with four-time Bathurst champion Garth Tander for a fifth consecutive year, Van Gisbergen could hold off a strong challenge from the Ford drivers Cameron Waters and Chaz Mostert, who are currently leading the Bathurst race. 

Leanne Tander is a race car driver who has participated in the Formula Ford, Formula 3, and Supercars Championship. She began racing karts in 1993 before moving to Formula Ford in 1998.

She had varying degrees of success there before advancing to the V8 Supercar in 2001 with Garry Rogers Motorsport and 2002 with Fleetcare Racing.

Leanne participated in Improved Production racing for the following three seasons, winning the Victorian and New South Wales championships in 2005 with her father Mark’s Mazda RX-7.

She continued competing in Australian F3 in 2008, earning four pole positions, five race victories, and only narrowly losing the championship to James Winslow in the championship round.

The Couple Has Two Children

Garth Tander and his wife Leanne Tander have two children together. Their children’s names are Scarlett and Sebastian.

The couple belongs to the same profession and they might have known each other through their profession. In 2007, when Garth led the Supercars standings and Leanne dominated the Australian Drivers Championship throughout the season, it was the first time a married couple had control of both Australian motor racing championships time.

Leanne Tander competed in professional racing for 17 years before leaving the car in the garage to have their first two children.

Garth Tander’s net worth is being reviewed, but some websites suggest his worth is between $1 million and $5 million.

He won the HSV Dealer Team’s 2007 series championship, and he has won five times in Australia’s most famous car racing, the Bathurst 1000. He won the Bathurst 1000 twice, once in 2009 with Will Davison and once in 2011 with Nick Percat.

Although Tander did not place first in any endurance races in 2015, he won the Enduro Cup while riding with Warren Luff. At the beginning of the 2017 campaign, Garth returned to GRM.

After two years with GRM, the organization abruptly fired him just before the 2019 season began. Triple Eight Race Engineering hired him to co-drive in endurance races despite not having a full-time career as a driver.

Garth Tander finished in second place in the 2000 championship, advancing to the final round, where he was defeated by Mark Skaife, who has won the tournament five times.

He won the inaugural Bathurst 24-hour race while operating a modified Holden Monaro 427C powered by a 7.0L engine instead of the 5.7L Gen III used in the road car.

Tander was generally expected to drive the Monaro for GRM in the 2003 Australian Nations Cup Championship, but he focused on V8 Supercars instead, giving Nathan Pretty the wheel. 

He stayed with Garry Rogers Motorsport in 2004, but it was revealed early in the season that he wouldn’t be joining them in 2005. Having a DNF in Race 1 and being unable even to start Race 2, his season got off to a bad start at Adelaide.

Garth’s performance improved a little throughout the year, and his best finishes were 4th overall for the Round at Barbagallo and Sandown.

This is the fourth year Garth Tander and Shane van Gisbergen have taken on the Mountain together. At the pre-Bathurst test, Gisbergen was the only driver of the #97 Commodore competing in his first World Rally Championship.

The team won the Great Race in 2020, although a late tyre failure prevented them from winning consecutive races the previous year. Tander has won the Great Race at Bathurst four times, all in Commodores. Van Gisbergen might be able to win another race at Mount Panorama and win his second straight championship.

In 2016, Tander took first place in the Sandown 500 while racing for the Holden Racing Team, which Walkinshaw Racing then owned. Following a late charge to the rear of Tander’s #2 vehicle, van Gisbergen came in second place on that particular day.
